Ormat Technologies and Dominica Pave the Way for a Sustainable Future with Geothermal Power

As the world gathers at COP28 in the UAE to set ambitious goals and make commitments to combat climate change, Ormat is stepping up its climate action efforts in collaboration with the Government of Dominica. The company is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to develop a state-of-the-art 10MW binary geothermal power plant in the Caribbean County of Dominica, marking a significant stride towards transitioning the nation away from fossil fuels.

The milestone in this sustainable journey is marked by the signing of a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Dominica Electricity Services Ltd. (DOMLEC). This agreement underscores a joint commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and fostering a cleaner, greener future for Dominica. The geothermal power plant, slated to be operational by the end of 2025, represents a pivotal step in aligning with the goals set at COP28.

The project builds upon the Government of Dominica's successful development of the geothermal reservoir and its dedication to resource productivity over the first five years. Ormat Technologies is proud to stand alongside the Government of Dominica as they lead the charge towards renewable energy production. This partnership exemplifies a collaborative approach to addressing climate change and underscores the importance of public-private alliances in driving sustainable development.

The location of the new geothermal facility, adjacent to Ormat's existing Bouilliante power plant in Guadeloupe, is strategic. This placement not only enhances operational synergies for Ormat but also sets the stage for future expansion. Ormat envisions the growth of the Bouillante power plant, ultimately increasing the total generating capacity in the Caribbean to approximately 35 MW, with the potential for further expansion. This expansion ensures that residents can access reliable and affordable power, irrespective of prevailing weather conditions, promoting energy security in the region.

The commitment to geothermal energy is a testament to Ormat Technologies' dedication to sustainability. Geothermal power is a clean and renewable energy source that harnesses the Earth's natural heat, offering a reliable and consistent power supply. By diversifying the energy mix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, Dominica is not only mitigating the impacts of climate change but also fostering a resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure for the future.

As the global community grapples with the urgent need to address climate change, initiatives like the one between Ormat Technologies and the Government of Dominica serve as beacons of hope. The project exemplifies how the private sector can play a crucial role in supporting countries in their transition to renewable energy. By investing in renewable energy sources and implementing sustainable practices, we can collectively pave the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Ormat Technologies and the Government of Dominica is a significant step forward in the journey towards a cleaner, greener world. It highlights the importance of international partnerships and private sector engagement in achieving climate goals. As we continue to make progress towards a sustainable future, let this partnership inspire similar initiatives worldwide, fostering a global commitment to combat climate change and build a resilient, low-carbon future.
